Visual Codes

I really enjoyed the lecture today as it allowed me to see another way in which brands can be analysed and the descriptive words that could be used. I also discovered the importance of other aspects of culture towards fashion, for example: architecture; history and collaborations, I decided to then use this to help with my brand analysis task with Tommy Hilfiger to get a better understanding of the brand before I complete my mood board.

Descriptive wording for specific styles of Brands.

Semiotics- Image Analysis

We were given an image which had no brand identification on and told to analyse the image through cultural reference, decades, key words and the brands that the image could possibly be linked to due to the analysis.
Cultural References/Decades
Madonna-Diamonds are a Girls Best Friend- 80's
Marilyn Manroe- 50's
Early Hollywood Glamour
Elizabethan Era
90's hair
Pretty in Pink film

Key words
Romantic, Soft, Sensual, Pretty, Girly, Sophisticated, Elegant, Sexual, Desirable

Brands
D&G
Chanel
Dior

We then worked on trying to find connections between our group brands, Tommy Hilfiger, Jack Wills and Ellesse. We struggled linking cultural references however Key words and relationships between other imagery or objects was easier.

Key Words
Heritage, Preppy, Country, Sporty, Sophisticated, Cult, Click, Unisex, Great Outdoors

Relationship with other Imagery and/or Objects
Rugby, Tennis, Golf (other sports)
Tea Party, Picnic, Cider, Tea
Grand architecture, Wood, Open Planned
New Artist Music, Relaxing

I found linking this task in with our own personal brands really helped gain an in depth understanding of not only that brand but the other brands within the group and will help towards the final presentation as it has shown a wider variety of links between the brands that we haven't discovered before.
