Savage Beauty at the V&A

Romantic Gothic
Yesterday I was lucky enough to visit the Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty Exhibition at the V&A. I have been really excited for this since I booked the tickets last year and even more so since the opening night on 14th March. With positive reviews from the likes of Suzy Menkes this lead me to be even more excited to look around myself. The exhibition itself was spectacular as the layout had been thought through along with the music for each room and the design itself.
Widows of Culloden AW06
The Girl who Lived in a Tree AW08
The Romantic Nationalism room was beautiful and I felt like these designs truly represent McQueen and how strongly he felt about his heritage with the Widows of Culloden collection from AW06 showing the beauty in the MacQueen tartan romanticised with intricate lace, and The Girl who lived in a Tree collection from AW08 showing ruffled textures and the royalty of a fairytale, really worked well together to show the true heritage of Alexander McQueen.

Plato's Atlantis SS10
The collection I was most looking forward to see was the Plato's Atlantis collection from S/S 2010, which was McQueens final show before his sudden death. This collection didn't just show the evolution of human kind but the devolution too which is an interesting concept to think about. There was also a contrast between nature and technology. The prints showed inspiration from nature through coral reefs, where as some of the shoes of the collection were 3D printed. However not all of them were made this way, as this was the first introduction of the 'Armadillo' boots, which to this day are used and interpreted by many designers and consumers are still intrigued as to how it is even possible to walk in them. The collection looked so powerful with the mannequins all in a row like a line of soldiers, along with the Nick Knight's Show Studio video being played behind that was included during the live stream of the show which was used to help create an interactive dialogue between creator and consumer.
Savage Beauty is spectacular and definitely a must see exhibition!
