Nottingham Research Task

Today we were set free in Nottingham to find out primary research into the scent industry. At first I was a bit daunted by the task that was ahead of us due to the lack of knowledge that I had about the market and therefore knowing where to go and what questions to ask. However I was pleasantly surprised how much information we gained from looking round a smaller city.
House of Fraser told us about their bestsellers for both Females, (Marc Jacobs, Chanel Mademoiselle, Gucci Guilty) and Males, (One Million, Armani Code, Jean Paul Gautier). Whilst looking in Superdrug for economy scents we found an interesting selling point of the Carolina Herrera 212 VIP, this was that if you bought the 100ml bottle you would also get two 'Lovers NYC Cups'.
We also decided to look in Next to see their homeware scents as we felt like we wanted to do something rather than the typical male or female perfumes. With this idea we also investigated into scents through bath bombs, pillows as well as make-up.
One thing we did find was a consistent between stores was the use of domes as a visual. We decided that this is not only a way of drawing you into a special product but it also works really well with scent as it contains the scent inside.
The most helpful stop on our Nottingham treasure hunt was John Lewis. The knowledge that the staff had of all the products was so in depth and were really happy to help with any questions we had and then go above and beyond to help. We were helped with questions about bestsellers, trends, the scents of all age groups, the launch dates and what I found most interesting was that they believed that 'people are becoming more adventurous and want to try' something new. This is really helpful for our brief as it shows that thinking of a new concept would possibly a real life situation in the current market trend.
