Who do you want to be? How are you going to get there?

Yesterdays lectures and seminars were really beneficial. They lecture focused on how you can personally improve yourself through creative methods whilst the seminar allowed us to have an informal discussion about our own key taste makers following last weeks lecture.
In the lecture we were given some really helpful tips such as,

keep your thoughts in one place
know yourself, 'you are a one off'
know your career-brands
know your opinions, both positive and critical
know the top players- who are your heroes, perfect dream team, love to work with, who you admire

I think the best advice I gained from the lecture was to forget about being nervous or being perfect and to just go for it. You may feel like your too young but now is the time to start developing yourself outside the classroom.

My Key Taste Makers

I picked two women who personally I feel have influenced the fashion industry through their chosen careers.
My first choice was Audrey Hepburn. Although she conformed to the beliefs of how a woman should be, skinny and fragile, she did have a huge influence on style. Hepburn was an academy award winning actress most famous for films such as Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Fair Lady and Funny Face. She however didn't stop there and became a fashion icon for her natural beauty and her monochrome, simplistic, classy and modest style. She was well known for the now iconic staple little black dress. She also set the new standard of model: thin, small and flat chested which was the opposite to the ever present model, Marilyn Monroe.
What I find the most interesting about Hepburn is how she used her fame and status to good use. She was a goodwill ambassador for Unicef for manny years and even when ill this was a priority to her.
My second choice was Lily Cole. Personally for me she is very influential and inspirational as she stood out from the crowd due to her bright red hair, porcelain skin, freckles and blue eyes and made it beautiful in which I have believed it never was due to the typical ginger jokes growing up. At the age of just 14 Lilly was snapped up by a modelling agency and had her first British Vogue cover at 16. This shows me even more how you are never too young to start promoting yourself how you want to be seen. She used her new success to be involved in films ad well as multiple charity events such as Comic Relief and Global Angels as well as environmental campaigns for the Bodyshop. Recently Cole is creating an app called Impossible, which allows people to make wishes and state what they are good at so people can be matched up to help each other. This not only shows her good natured helpful personality but also how she understands how the world is developing.

Therefore like Hepburn, she used her fame to good use rather than being self indulgent which I believe is very inspirational.
