Construction Methods

This week we looked at how construction methods and layouts can create a language. We had a collection of booklets, look books and other brand literature to look at and evaluate the pros and cons. From the collection I found that there was an overuse of the reverse approach for Mens and Womens. This was probably an interesting layout when it was first used however it has been repeated multiple times now. However, Farhi have taken the reverse approach and adapted it to be a fold out of two booklets instead, which I thought was quite innovative.

I also liked the Zara look book which used a tracing paper overlay for the front cover. This created visual contrast between the front cover and the other pages. The pattern was also used for backgrounds on images inside the booklet, therefore showing a contrast of foreground and background.

We then worked in groups to distinguish a link between some of the booklets. We chose a Kate Spade, Anthropologie and Boden booklet due to their similarities in: print, bold colours, decorative prints, hippie, dress up and the female gender bias.

This task not only helped with being able to see all the different styles of booklets but it also gave more of an insight of all the different brands and the ways they work to create a message.
