Tuesday 7th January 2014

We decided to wake up early so that we could get a full day of activities in, our first stop, the department store, Macys. The store was so big and bright with designer labels staggered around in their own little shops along with make up stands. It was a good job Macys was close to the hotel as even with over 4 layers on including thermals and two pairs of gloves we were still freezing.

Our next stop was to the Fashion Institute of Technology to view the Trendology Museum.  Trendology is the study of fashion trends and their relationship to culture. It examines the diverse sources from which fashion trends have emerged over the past 250 years including urban street style, art, music, film and sociopolitical. Why do trends originate? Why do trends appear at specific moments? What do trends tell us about our culture?
Many trends emerge and fade, certain others continually re-surface, each time imbued with new cultural resonance.

Sources from the WGSN Autumn/Winter 2014/15 trend forecast released September 13 2013 showed,
Up Trending Colours: 58% Navy, 9% white, 3% black
Core Colours: 0% Pink
Down Trending Colours: -3% Blue, -9% Grey & Red, -25% Green and -26% Orange
With patterns such as Camouflage 73% and Checks/Plaids 19% on the rise.

The exhibition showed how trends that are upcoming, e.g. camouflage, originated through designers such as Claude Sabbah in 2001.

We then visited the Flatiron district, stopping off at the designer stores along the way. We attempted to visit the AIGA museum however it was closed until the next exhibition, however we did get a photo to prove this. We then walked down 5th Avenue stopping off for some shopping and being particularly impressed with the Levis and Victoria Secret stores.

Our last stop of the day was dinner in Times Square. I had seen the pictures and the films but nothing is as good as the real thing.
