Fashion Loves Art!

Todays lecture was really interested and focused on the cultural references of fashion throughout time. Modernist fashion from the 1850's-1950's included oriental influence and in the 20th century Art Deco. The oriental influence came from Japanism in fashion however was adapted to European market. Art Deco was an influential reference in the 1920's and 30's not only in fashion but in film, architecture, art, etc. I personally like the Art Deco influence to fashion, the contrast between individual shapes and also the black and gold.
Another modernist influence was Avant Garde. This influence showcased abstract futurism. I think that the fashion influence is a bit extreme and influence the haute couture rather than the high street fashion.
After the modernist era was the post-modern from the 1960s onwards. The main influence in the 60's was Pop art. Pop art symbolised the mass consumption of products. This era had influences from artists such as Andy Warhol and James Blake who was the graphic designer of the famous Sgt. Peppers Beatles album.

We also looked at brands that use historical or cultural references.
I personally was interested in the cultural reference that was made by the brand Levi's with the famous Michelangelo's David statue. The image is identical to the statue however adding the typical Levis project. This will help me with my Brand zine in project 3 as it shows me the cultural influences that Levis uses.
